agent in powdered products. Last September, a malfunction-
ing compressor exploded, injuring two employees and causing a chemical leak, suspending plant operations2. The company reported that no em- ployees were idled during the shut- down, with many of them involved in the actual repair work or undergoing additional training. WACKER comprises four major
business units: silicone, polymers, polysilicon, and biosolutions. The company’s silicones portfolio con- tains more than 2,800 specialized products used in energy and elec- tronics, automotive engineering and medtech, among others. This division generated about 45 per- cent of the company’s 2017 sales. The polymers division in-
cludes state-of-the-art binders and polymeric additives used in surface coatings, adhesives, seal ants, and construction chemicals, as well as in carpet applications and nonwo- vens. These products accounted for 25 percent of the company’s sales. Pure polysilicon is the key
build ing block for semiconductors and photovoltaics. Polysilicon gen- erated rough ly 23 percent of the company’s sales. In 2018, the global photovoltaic market is expected to grow by anywhere from 6 to 20 per- cent, depending on the region. Ger- many is forecasting 33 percent growth and China 20 percent, while the U.S. is expected to see a decline of around 13 percent. The company’s biosolutions divi-
sion focuses on the development of customized solutions and products used in food ingredients, pharmaceuti- cal actives and agrochemicals, which accounted for about 4 percent of sales.
