CAREERS @ MATRAVERS

with Wiltshire Council, ‘Your Choices’ explains the three learning styles (kinaesthetic, visual & auditory) and the learning pathways that suit each type. The show also highlights the barriers to learning as well as the influences that young people are affected by when making their choices.

At Matravers, we offer 3 careers interview days to support students with researching a range of careers pathways, the application process and interview skills and techniques.

The first careers fair of this academic year took place on 20th September with all students from Year 9-13 and year 7 having the opportunity to meet a wide range of employers and further education providers to find out more about careers available to them. We were privileged to be one of the first schools whose careers fair was supported by the James Dyson Foundation; whom in turn were extremely positive about all of our students. Danya Walker from the James Dyson Foundation ‘Matravers pupils are the best. All so polite. It was a pleasure to be part of your careers fair.’ She also expressed a big thank you to the 6th form ambassadors who supported her at the careers fair, stating ‘Daniel Mead was marvellous. One of the best presenters I have had for a very long time.’

The first of these interview days; the ‘BIG’ interview for Year 10 students, took place on Thursday 14th December. A large range of employees supported this event by interviewing students for a specific job chosen by the students. Each interview was followed by students receiving invaluable feedback relating to both their CV and also their presentation at the interview itself. A large number of students attended CV writing workshops and interview skills workshops with a representative from Job Centre plus in preparation for their interview.

In addition to these year group events, twenty five Matravers students have been offered the exciting opportunity to have an employee as a mentor this academic year, supporting them with overcoming barriers to their learning, careers research and raising their aspirations by setting goals and mentoring them with the aim of achieving these.

On Tuesday 5th December, students in Year 9 who are approaching their options process watched a ‘Your Choices’ production by the Soloman Theatre Company relating to careers choices. Developed in partnership
