LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE

The new academic year has seen the introduction of our student librarians. This programme has been running since the start of term, each day a student from year 7 comes along to the LRC and helps with librarian duties. So far it has been students from 7.1 and all of them have really enjoyed their time in the LRC.

We have also been lucky enough to recruit new break and lunchtime librarians in Year 7. These include Lucy Parker, Tamsin Pearse, Mia – May Saunders, Lucy Harper, Lexie Pace, Daisy Thurman, Autumn Dempster and Jayah Dowling. All the students are from Year 7 but anyone can become a librarian.

Students have also been completing Independent Reading Booklets during tutor time. These booklets are designed to help the students gain a better understanding of the book they are reading. Many of the students have been finding these useful and they have been enjoying the new look of the booklet. It has been updated to include some more creative activities, something the students asked for last year.

Joffre White, who wrote the Frog series and the book Earthland, visited our school last year and proved so popular we decided to take him on as our Patron. This is scheme that has been running for several years and gives schools the chance to work alongside authors, who can support the students with reading and writing.

Both Lucy and Mia-May have really enjoyed helping this term. They said that they have “found it really interesting, learning about the LRC.” Jayah has said that it has been great to come together with friends and have some responsibility too”.

If you would like to become a Librarian then please let Mrs Gray know and I will put you on our waiting list.

Coming up is our first Tea Read. These took place last year and we are holding them again this year too. Lots of students

are coming to the LRC on the 7th December to enjoy some tea and cake and read their books. This is a great opportunity for students to do some reading and so far, lots of Year 7 have said they will attend. Look out for the next one in term 4.

Students have also been completing Independent Reading Booklets

Finally, we have some very exciting news to share. From January 2018 Matravers will be have Patron of Reading. We are the only school in Wiltshire to be lucky enough to have a Patron of Reading for 2018 and it will mean that our students will have the opportunity to work with a published author.

At Matravers we feel very privileged to be able to offer our children this unique experience, which will enhance student’s progress in all areas of the curriculum.

2018 is going to be an exciting time in the LRC and I cannot wait!
