Year 11 (continued)
PREFECTS Now that the pupils are in year 11 there are many more opportunities available for them to get involved in which require responsibility. One of these opportunities is the chance to become a prefect. Pupils had to write a short letting describing what qualities they hold for the job role and why they would want the position. All applicants then had an interview with Mrs Dovey and myself. I was impressed with the standard of the pupil’s answers and how well they came across in quite a stressful situation.
Each prefect has one break time duty each week and are involved in a sub-group committee. The sub-groups are: Prom, year book, sports, charity. The prefects will also be involved in lots of other events throughout the year, such as parent’s evenings.
They were congratulated on being selected for this prestigious role with a rewards breakfast.
Prefect sub-committee: Sports The sports sub-committee arranged and set up a year 11 Inter-tutor Badminton competition during lunchtimes. It is important that Year 11’s can ‘switch off’ from the stresses of their work and exams and ensure that they spend time doing activities which they enjoy.
There will be a number of lunchtime inter-tutor activities organised throughout the year, not just sport related and it would be great to get as many pupils involved as possible.
in subject areas. Students who don’t meet the criteria will be able to collect their hoodies when they have completed their exams.
The year book committee are working hard and are currently in the decision stage of the layout and design. More information about this will be coming out over the next few weeks.
With regards to the Prom, this will be taking place on July 4th 2018 at Cumberwell Golf Club. Students will be issued with a ‘golden ticket’; the first ones will be delivered in the Christmas rewards assembly. The ‘golden ticket’ will allow pupils to book and start paying for their Prom ticket. These ‘Golden tickets’ will be issued for progress, attendance, attitude and involvement in extra-curricular clubs and period 6 lessons. More information on the Prom will be issued in the new year.
MATRAVERS SIXTH FORM
OPEN EVENING On Thursday 19th November year 11 pupils and parents were invited in to have a look around the sixth form, speak to subject specific teachers and seek guidance with the sixth form application forms. The evening was very well attended and it was great listening to pupils making informed decisions about their post-16 education.
The deadline for Matravers school sixth form applications is Friday December 15th . If you have any questions about the sixth form or if you would like more information then please contact Mr Browning (Director Post 16) or myself.
Prefect sub-committee:
Year book/ leavers hoodies Although the thought of Year 11 leaving seems like many months away, it is important that planning their yearbook, hoodies and Prom is underway.
The prefects chose 4 colours for the year group to choose from for their ‘leavers hoodies’. The whole year group were then able to vote for their favourite colour. The majority vote was Burgundy with a charcoal accent inside the hood. The full cost of a Hoodie will be £19.20. A hoodie can be secured by paying either the full amount or a £5.00 deposit. Students will earn the right to wear these hoodies to school and they will be released in batches after the Easter holidays. We will be looking for students who display positive attitude, regular attendance to Period 6s, excellent school attendance and who are making good progress
BRISTOL UNIVERSITY VISIT 24 pupils had the exciting opportunity to visit Bristol University for the day. Pupils were taken on a tour of the campus- the size of it seemed to shock all of the pupils! They had a lecture about Student life, courses, finances, careers etc which was a real eye opener. Pupils were able to ask lots of questions and really get a feel for what University life is like. The day was finished off with a lecture about Medieval English- which was a lot more engaging and exciting than it sounds!!
It is really important that pupils are looking at their future and are making informed decisions about the route and career path they want to take. This links in with their sixth form and college applications- I would hate for the pupils to make ill-informed decisions that will affect there opportunities later in life.
