PE (continued) FOOTBALL

In other news, the girl’s extra-curricular basketball has continued to develop with Year 7, 8 and 9 students regularly attending the weekly club. This surge in numbers meant that the girls had to merge in to two squads. Recently, Matravers hosted a basketball tournament of their own. On Wednesday 23rd November, teams from St Edmunds (Salisbury), St Augustines and St Johns (Marlborough) travelled to Matravers to compete in the Wiltshire Girls County Cup tournament. Two sides represented Matravers with Grace O’Connor, Lily Morris, Olivia Norris, Lily Dimambro and Jayah Dowling playing in light blue and Lauren O’Connor, Yazmin Green, Rachel Godden, Sammy Kirk, Lilly Sperring, Emma Price, Jodi Gunning and Ellie Johnson representing Matravers in dark blue. The girls showed true sporting character and determination as they finished just outside of the qualifying spots. Special mentions go to Ellie Johnson, Ereena Ullah, Keira Strachan, Eva Watson and Leah Rendall for their continued commitment to the club and the school.

Year 7 Boys The Year 7 Boys have played two matches so far this school year, both of which have been friendlies. First up was home to Stonar School, whereby the boys fought back from being 2-0 down to draw the game 3-3, with goals from Connor Shelbourne and Ben Masters. The team shown brilliant courage and determination to commence the comeback. Their second game was also against Stonar School, this time away from home. Coming off the back of their late fightback, the boys went into the game with confidence. A dominating performance led to a 2-0 victory, although squandered chances could have took the game even further out of Stonar’s reach.

Year 8 Boys The Year 8 Boys team have also played two matches so far this school year, one as a mix with Year 9 students and one on their own. Both of these fixtures have been against Stonar School. The most recent fixture saw our Year 8s play as one age group. The boys put on a great performance, however they were unable to get anything out of the game – losing 4-2. Sam Pym put on a man of the match performance in goal, keeping the team in the game at halftime. He continued to pull off several tremendous saves in the second half.

Year 8 and 9 Boys The first game of the football calendar at Matravers was a Year 8 and 9 Boys mixed age group game vs Stonar School. The two age groups worked excellently together, with the Year 9s supporting and encouraging their younger counterparts. Going into halftime being 3-1 up gave the boys a solid lead to hold. Stonar fought back, however the Matravers boys proved too strong, resulting in a 4-3 victory.

the Year 9 boys have also played a friendly fixture against Stonar School – who played with a mixed age group of Year 9 and 10 boys. Unfortunately, the boys were beaten 4-2, they put on a courageous performance. With multiple chances for both teams, and an end to end game, a draw would have been a fair result.

A cup game against Lavington School was the Year 9’s first competitive game of the season. A strong defensive performance resulted in a 1-0 win. The only goal of the game coming from an unsaveable shot from Nick Brisdon, which nestled in the top corner. The victory sees Matravers progress into the quarter final of the County Cup.

Year 8 and 9 Girls The first fixture the girls played this year was a cup game against Sheldon School. An extremely strong Sheldon team, made up of several County players, proved too difficult, leading to a heavy loss of 16-0. Nonetheless, the girls shown great enthusiasm, resilience and determination to keep trying until the final whistle.

Their second match was a friendly against St Laurence School at home. With the Cup loss behind them, and keen to prove a point, the girls battled excellently to forge a 4-1 win. An exciting attacking game played by both teams made for good entertainment for the fans. Goals from Rachel Godden, Sammy Kirk and Eleanor Trevor helped the team to victory.

BADMINTON The annual West Wilts School Games Badminton tournament at took place at Center Parcs on December 1st. Matravers took five strong teams and twenty one officials.
