ICT
It has been a time of great change for the ICT and Computer Science department at Matravers School over the last two terms. The introduction of two lessons per fortnight for years 7, 8 and 9 has been an exciting development for all involved. Staff and students are finding the new curriculum broad and challenging. Throughout the year, students will study a program covering 3 key areas – Computer Science, Digital Literacy and Creative Technology. This will give a really strong foundation to whatever areas students wish to pursue later on in their education. Students can look forward to learning about programming in Scratch and Python, learning about digital imaging, animation and web design using Adobe Creative Suite, as well as learning about how computers work and how to stay safe in their digital lives.
In years 10 and 11, students have the opportunity to choose to study ICT, Computer Science or both. The Computer Scientists are studying for the new AQA GCSE in Computer Science. This is a rigorous and modern qualification, covering a broad range of programming and computer science concepts. ICT students in year 10 are studying for a Cambridge National in Creative iMedia. This exciting qualification involves creating products such as animations and websites and learning about the processes used in these creative industries.
Our year 12 and 13 students are studying the new BTEC in IT qualification from Pearson. In this qualification they are enjoying learning about a range of IT systems, how social media is used in business, app design and about the information systems which underpin so much of what we take for granted in the digital era.
As the new Head of ICT and Computer Science at Matravers School, I have brought a lot of ideas from my previous role. I am absolutely passionate about the impact that technology has on our lives (both positive and negative!) and so these thought provoking elements permeate a lot of the discussions in the classroom. Another key consideration in planning the curriculum is ensuring that every student at Matravers is well prepared for the demands of the 21st Century digital world. Moving to Matravers has been exciting and daunting in equal measure but I am so proud to be a part of such a brilliant and well led school. It was definitely the right move!
