GOVERNORS REPORT TO STAKEHOLDERS 2016-2017

It is considered best practice for the Board of Governors to compile an annual report for parents and other stakeholders, setting out the key actions of the Board and charting their impact on the school. Information on individual governors, including their responsibilities and attendance, can also be found online: http://www.matravers.wilts.sch.uk/governors

1. Impact Report

The Board of Governors has three core functions: s Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

s Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils;

s Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

i. Vision, ethos and strategy A vision has been defined as ‘A clear and mental picture of what could be, fuelled by the conviction that it should be. Our vision for the school may be found on the Matravers website: http://matravers.wilts.sch.uk/ our-school/4575-vision-amp-values.html. The governing board used a new format for strategic planning that enabled us to see even more clearly the link between our vision, the plan to make it happen and how much progress has been made towards meeting our goals. Our goals included targets for exam results, pupil attendance, staff development and training, and improvements to the school’s site and facilities.

Governors support the vibrant and aspirational ethos of Matravers, taking a close interest in initiatives taken to help develop our students into rounded and grounded young people with high ambitions for themselves. Colleagues have been delighted to attend a variety of school performances and special events, where our students’ confidence and ability have been displayed to great effect.

We have engaged with key stakeholders, taking note of the views of students, staff, and parents.

Students Governors undertook Visit Days in Terms 2 and 4, with a focus on Sixth Form and Year 10 respectively. These visits help to give governors a first-hand insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the school. We were pleased to visit a variety of excellent lessons and spoke to panels of students. It was good to note that the students had high aspirations for themselves and that they felt well supported by our staff. The Sixth Formers gave every indication that they were on track to perform exceptionally well in their exams, which was in fact the case. The vast majority of our Sixth Form students went on to study at their first choice university, into further training or employment.

Staff A staff survey revealed the following results: 100% agreed that students are safe in school, 98% that bullying is dealt with effectively, 98% that leaders do all they can to improve learning, and 100% that they knew what leaders were trying to achieve. At Visit Days students always speak well of staff, commenting on how they do all they can to support them and ensure they make progress. Our teachers are beginning to receive the national recognition they deserve. Miss Gemma Richards was awarded the ‘One Dance UK’ award for Outstanding Secondary Dance Teacher of the Year. We are currently fully staffed, with all positions covered. The school has benefitted from the outstanding leadership given by our Headteacher, Dr. Riding.

Parents Parents’ Questionnaires undertaken during the academic year showed that 98% agreed that their child felt safe at the school, 96% that their child is making good progress, 96% that their child is well taught and 92% that there is a good standard of
