MUSIC WESTBURY CIVIC SERVICE

This year we were privileged to perform again at the Westbury Civic Service. The choir performed a beautiful arrangement of Be Still for the Presence of the Lord, by Mrs Sorga and received glowing feedback from the audience. There was also delicious tea and cake afterwards to warm us up on a cold Sunday evening.

MATRAVERS YOUNG MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR 2017 Thursday 12 October 7-9pm

This year’s Young Musician of the Year event was another fun-filled evening packed with musical performances ranging from instrumental to vocal, solos to ensembles, Year 7 through to Year 13. Having auditioned to get through to this stage, the 15 finalists were divided into three categories: Junior (Years 7-9); Senior (Years 10-13); Groups.

The four judges were local ambassadors of Music. They were Angie Fawcett who is the President of the Westbury Lions, Tracy Sullivan who is the manager of Town Hall Arts in Trowbridge, Christine Jenkins who is a founder of the Westbury Music and Arts Festival and Mike Slater who is a Year 5/6 teacher at Bitham Brook school and a keen musician. They watched all of the performances and gave constructive criticism throughout the concert. The hardest part about their job was deciding on the winners at the end. The overall Young Musician of the Year was Beth Murtie, a Year 13 singer who sang ‘Skyscraper’. Other winners included Cameron Young (Year 9, rapper), Maisie Long (Year 10, singer) and Harmonize (Year 8 vocal group). 2 other finalists were also awarded the new Leos Endeavour Award which recognises potential and which will finance 10 hours of private tuition for each winner. One winner of this award was Lauren Eady, pianist, Year 11 who will take piano lessons in the Spring and the other was a trio of Year 9 girls comprising 2 guitarists and a singer, who will receive 10 one hour workshops with a local singer songwriter.

This annual event is sponsored by the Westbury Lions who year on year generously support the musical endeavours of young people in Westbury.
