PE (continued)

The match finished as a draw (last 10 second goal from John of Gaunt) but it was a lovely result to end a delightful game which showcased sportsmanship, happiness and resilience at its best. The girls were a credit to the school. Special mention to Mya Fasko for stepping up as an excellent GK throughout.

GCSE PE RESIDENTIAL

On Friday 13th October Mr Reeves, Miss Young, 22 GCSE PE pupils and myself headed off to a PGL Centre on the Isle of Wight with much excitement about the weekend ahead of us!

Over the weekend pupils (and staff!) had the opportunity to try out many different outdoor adventure activities. There was a lot of anxiety and in trepidation about some of the activities but the pupils rose to the challenge and were supportive and encouraging of each other.

The activities consisted of teambuilding, giant swing, climbing, abseiling, zip wire, obstacle course (blind folded!), Jacobs’s ladder and evening sporting events.

It was a pleasure for us as staff to see these pupils excelling outside of the classroom and displaying such resilience.

We were all very proud! Miss Reeves

PRIMARY PE

Over the last two terms the link between Matravers and the Primary schools in Westbury has gone from strength to strength. The annual football festival kicked off the season with a bang with 8 teams competing in a round robin tournament. Many schools entered mixed gender teams however Bitham Brook entered a very competitive all girls team to shock many of the boy teams in the competition. Once again a band of helpers were on hand to ensure the successful running of the tournament, a big thank you to, Joe Cannings, Oscar Morris, George Murden, Adlai Gunning, Erin Coulson, Jack Dovey, Brad Hill and Haydn Marshman.

A cold October morning saw the annual cross country competition return to Matravers for both year 5 and 6 students. The year 5 girls covered a distance of 1500m; the year 5 boys and year 6 girls running 1750m; with the year 6 boys closing the competition with 2000m. The course was tough this year with some muddy patches and some tricky inclines. Over 150 students completed the course for their schools with the first 5 runners scoring for each school. The overall result saw Bitham Brook victorious; however a special mention must go Bratton School. Only competing in the year 6 girls’ race, Bratton had all of their runners finish in the top 30 in the final result. Once again some notable helpers allowed for

a successful competition, year 12 students Hayden Bailey and Megan Redstall ran with the students to set a steady pace and to guide the way, while Zach Pearce, Charlie Player, Joe Sanders, Gregor Paton, Joe Morse, Max Bishop, Daniel Jones, Jake Dudley and Paige Adams marshalled the course and collected results, a big thank you from the PE department.

The final festival this term was led by Badminton England to students from Bitham Brook and Chapmanslade in order to introduce badminton at primary school level. Learning the grip for both backhand and forehand, and learning how to serve and to rally were the main focus of the session with a competitive edge at the end with four teams completing a series of challenges. Helpers this time came from year 8, with Casper Morris, Todd Pearce, Alfie Murden, Daniel Jackson and Joe Hubbart demonstrating outstanding leadership skills to the students from each school.

Badminton England have now started a Primary badminton club on a Tuesday night at Matravers from 4:30 – 5:30. To register interest or for more details please contact. Mr Reeves, hreeves@matravers.wilts.sch.uk

Term 1 and 2 marked a great start to the year for extra-curricular basketball. Firstly, it must be mentioned that a minimum of 25 students turn up to basketball training each week and this significant number has continued to rise. The first Key Stage 3 (boys) basketball fixture on the calendar was hosted by St Augustines School on Monday 13th November. After a close couple of opening quarters, Matravers trailed by 24 points to 10. Matravers were led by basketball Captain Cameron Williams as he kept his side in the game through a series of tremendous two-point baskets and free throws. Although the team displayed a performance of pure sportsmanship and resilience, the game ended 50-15, with Cameron scoring a three-point basket on the buzzer!
