MATRAVERS STUDENTS PERFORM AT THE WESTBURY MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL
The Westbury Music and Arts Festival takes place every year for two weeks in September / October and Matravers students are regular performers at it. This year we took part in two events: The Opening Ceremony and the Schools Concert.
The Opening Ceremony was on Friday 22 September and we took a variety of singers. Firstly, as is tradition, we took the choir who sang two songs: “Somewhere Only We Know” and “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You”. Then there were the relatively new Harmonize singers, a group made up of Year 8 students who pre- pared two songs, “Photograph” and “Stand by Me/Cold Water”. Harmonize worked hard last academic year, while they were all in Year 7, to put together these songs and the original group sang at this event. Now they have expanded to include a new intake of Year 7s and are working towards new material.
We also had a performance of “Feeling Good” featuring Tom Bond (voice) and Dylan Jones (piano).
Finally, we used this opportunity to showcase our fantastic 6th form singers for Beauty and the Beast. This included Maddie Hewitt singing “Home”, Mollie Green singing “Beauty and the Beast” and Nathan Chadwick/ Cameron Sinden singing “Gaston”.
All of our performances were well received and it got our performers nicely warmed up for another busy event calendar this year.
Two weeks later we actually took part in what was almost the final event of the Festival: the Schools Concert. Here we took part amongst a number of other schools, including Bitham Brook and Westbury Junior school. We took soloists from years 9-11 to this event, including Grace Hime, Bryony Patten-Cuff and Maisie Long (all singers) and Lauren Strand & Lauren Eady (piano). Our programme aimed to give some less experienced performers an opportunity to perform in public, as well as taking some of our more experienced students who have simply not performed for a while. Again, as in the Opening Ceremony, our performers were well-received and we had many compliments about them.
Big thanks go to Mr Griffiths and Mrs Phillips who helped to get the students ready and also to Ian Cunningham and Christine Jenkins from the Festival for inviting us to take part.
