HUMANITIES DARTMOOR TRIP
As A level geography students, we completed a four-day residential in Dartmoor. This trip involved some field work as well as fun activities for us as a class. We started the day by driving down to Dartmoor and stopping for lunch. Before arriving at pixies holt – our accommodation - we stopped and climbed up our first Dartmoor tor then we had a briefing at the accommodation followed by a team building activity where we built our own zipwires across the river East Dart. This was a brilliant experience to start the trip and it was entertaining for us all to see Mr Taylor weighing down the rope and landing in the river. After this we had a lovely meal and had some down time to do work and play games.
The next day we had an early start heading down to Elbury cove and Broad Sands beach where we conducted some research and collected data as well as skimming rocks and exploring the area. After having a packed lunch by the coast, we headed into Totnes – a small quirky village. Here we carried out questionnaires and spoke to the locals about the town. With our findings we learnt that what seemed like a perfectly normal town was actually quirky but has a lovely, friendly community. After this, we got back on the mini buses and headed back towards the hostel. Before dinner we stopped at another tor and were given the option to walk up it or continue back to Pixie’s holt. Most of us took this opportunity and started the walk up the tor, where an amazing view could be seen from. This short and relaxed walk before dinner was a nice way to calm down, and end the afternoon. For dinner we had a pulled pork roast which went down a treat and with our down time that evening Mr. Taylor, Miss Ross and Mr Cooper planned some games and quizzes in which we worked in teams – need I say it was very competitive.
The next day we enjoyed a full cooked breakfast and set off for another eventful day. We took a long stroll through a wooded area taking soil samples as we went. We exited the wooded area and walked up Bellever tor, where many of us found some good photo opportunities.
Setting off down the other side of the tor we walked back into the other end of the woodland and took a ‘’shortcut’’ as Mr Taylor called it... But actually, it took us longer as we had to go through some boggy areas and even cross a stream. This walk was followed by a drive down to a small river with a stone bridge across it, this was the site we took some river level readings and picked up some snacks at the local village shop. We stopped here and sat on the bridge, dangling our legs above the water, enjoying our lunch in a lovely environment. On the drive back, we detoured to a reservoir where we tried several attempts at taking a panorama image with our class on both sides of the image, requiring us to run around the back of the camera and get back into place 20 meters to the left. Finally heading back to Pixies holt, we had some dinner, then walked up Yar tor to watch the sunset over the hills and to have a memorable final evening in Dartmoor.
