PE (continued)

encouraged the students to remain positive throughout. The girls didn’t do as well as they had hoped, however as Grace O’Connor stated, ‘at least we know what we need to work on in training’. I am very much looking forward to continue training with the girls and I am excited for their future together as a team. Huge thanks to Lily Morris, Olivia Norris, Jayah Dowling, Tillie Chalke, Grace O’Connor, Tegan Marks, Daisy Thurman, Phoebe Dutton-Ward and Ruby Ladd for making that early Saturday morning slightly more bearable!

The Year 8 team have been training regularly for their matches after Christmas. Here’s hoping for another successful season!

The game was won in the last quarter and we came away with a 1 goal lead scored in the last 30 seconds – a real nail-biter in tough conditions and the second win of the season.

The girls then travelled to John of Gaunt and faced a strong side. With Matravers staff umpiring on other courts, the Matravers girls were forced to be independent, self-reflect and tackle any issues on court with maturity and ‘resilience’. The girls came away with their 3rd win of the season and showed real promise in their ability to self-manage.

Finally, the girls faced their toughest opposition yet, when St Laurence travelled to play us on our new Astro. The lights and the rain made the conditions difficult in the first quarter and so we had a quick move indoors which saw the quality of the game improve for both teams, unfortunately the quality of St Laurence team was just too much for our girls and we suffered our first defeat.

Year 9 Netball The beginning of October brought the Year 9 Netball team’s first fixture against St Augustine’s (away). On arrival we found out that unfortunately they were not able to field a year 9 team and so had provided a Year 10B team. The Matravers team took this in their stride, produced some strong Netball and helped the team to gel together. The girls came away with a really strong win against the Year 10 team showing that their determination and team work surpassed the experience on the St Augustine’s side.

The very next day saw the girls travelling to Trowbridge once again to face Clarendon’s Year 9 team. Despite the very windy conditions the girls fought hard with position changes throughout, highlighting the girls versatility, and all of the team getting at least ½ a game.

Special mentions go to Lauren O’Connor, Lilly Sperring and Jodi Gunning for assisting the Year 9’s this season and helping them to ‘success’. A huge thanks to Mrs Murray (Maths) for her brilliant coaching and to Chloe Kinder and Lily Beckett (Year 11) for their support and ‘dynamism’ when scoring for one of the matches.

Year 10 Netball The Year 10’s had Matravers’ first Netball fixture of this academic year when Clarendon came to play on our brand new Astro. They were a very well-drilled side and beat us convincingly, however our girls were incredibly resilient throughout, provided a 10-girl strong side and everyone made it on court. On asking them to take responsibility for their own target going into the last quarter, they chose to dominate defensively, following a recent training session. The girls went out and put practices into action resulting in Clarendon having their worst quarter, only scoring 2 against us. An excellent transfer from

training to match – well done!

The girls then travelled to John of Gaunt where our substitutions were more limited and saw our star GD Alice Wain move into the GS position and score our first goal of the season, claiming POTM. Success!

Finally, St Laurence travelled to face us on a dark and wet November evening. The first half was slow as the conditions made it difficult, but on moving inside, our opposition managed to move the ball quickly through court, resulting in defeat. Emelia Florczyk was our ‘happiest’ player when she learned how to shoot before our opposition arrived and took to it so quickly she featured as our main GS and scored both goals with excellent technique. Well done girls!

Year 11 Netball The Year 11 team travelled to St Augustine’s for their first match of the season. Unfortunately, due to injury, we were missing one of our starting 7 but Vanessa Malek, our first choice substitution, stepped up and represented the school well. We faced a strong side with an excellent GA who dominated throughout the game resulting on our first defeat.

Our next fixture saw us travelling to John of Gaunt where we played the most enjoyable and exciting fixture of the season. The game was played in excellent spirit throughout with happiness beaming off all players. Despite taking a 6 goal lead in the first quarter, we faced an injury, and with a lack of substitutions, we struggled to maintain the lead.
