CCF A FLYING START!

Matravers Combined Cadet Force successfully launched as a standalone Contingent at the beginning of term. We have enjoyed a series of celebrations regarding our CCF, supported the local community and completed expedition training in the Mendip Hills.

We began the term preparing for our Opening Ceremony September 29th 2017, which was graciously supported by Dr Riding and many other departments in the school. We were grateful to receive so much support returning to Matravers to parade onsite.

Welcoming Brigadier Steve Hodder to officially open the Contingent, we conducted a prestigious ceremony welcoming members of local community for our formal parade to begin preceding’s. We were joined by the Mayor of Westbury Councillor Gordon King and his wife Mrs Carole King, our partnerships schools Contingent Commander Captain Jason Holt, Captain Mark Symonds, Miss Chelsea Daubney, Local Youth Facilitator Ms Jan Bowra, School Governor Mr Brian Ralph, Training Safety Advisor WO2 Charlie Helm and further representatives from the Reserve

Forces and Cadets Association. The cadets paraded with pride and were a credit to our Contingent. Upon completing the formality of our opening parade the cadets were dismissed to relax, refuel and begin setting up their demonstrations.

We were very grateful to receive so many parents and supporters filling the school hall ahead of speeches about the project, the significance to the school as well enjoying some wonderful catering from our Sixth Form Food technology class. Captain Fairnington welcomed guests prior to introducing Dr Riding who provided the background of the project, his desire to have a Combined Cadet Force within his School and value he recognises in the students who are now cadets and thanking all those organisations who have supported our development. Captain Fairnington then introduced Brigadier Hodder who was able to provide details of the Cadet Expansion Programme, the initiative from Government to implement this project and the long term focus of developing young people into well rounded citizens for the future. Captain Fairnington completed the speeches thanking parents for their patience, support and understanding of the

developing Contingent, describing the range of activities available in CCF and then providing vision for future CCF events, finishing his speech with a small quote from a cadet who left the school at the beginning of term who carries the principles he has learnt from CCF. This concluded the speeches, guests were then split into three groups to visit demonstrations around the school, cadets were demonstrating First Aid and how to preserve life, bushcraft, how to survive in the toughest circumstances and Archery a Contingent favourite and the first extended activity the cadets experienced upon the joining CCF. We concluded demonstrations and the cadets fell in, ahead of the closing parade in the school hall with all guests observing. Brigadier Hodder was then asked to present our annual awards to the Cadets, Alpha Sections Cadets’ Cadet of the Year was awarded to Cadet Sophie Campbell, Alpha Section Commanders Cadets of the Year was awarded to Lance Corporal Callum Fouracre, Bravo Sections Cadets’ Cadet of the Year was awarded to Cadet Daisy Veall, Bravo Sections Commanders Cadet of the Year was awarded to Cadet Jack Duce and the Contingents Commanders award was received by Corporal Owen Smith. Brigadier Hodder then made a closing address to the Cadets and Guests. Cadets were then dismissed and had to opportunity to interact with guests more informally. We were truly impressed by the turnout of supporters and guests and this indicated how the Contingent is starting to affect our community within not only Matravers but Westbury. A massive well done to our young people and our sincerest thanks to all guests who supported the event.
