Humanities (continued)
On our final day we set off at about 10am, we detoured to Lympstone, a small town on the estuary of the river. This town is one of our A level case studies so it was extremely beneficial for us to visit this place to grasp a better understanding of the area and to be able to have a more physical context when writing about it in exams. We eventually set off on the road again and arrived back at school just after 2pm making it back in time for the end of the day and allowing us to go home on time after this wonderful residential.

Students had three weeks to complete their projects and once done they were presented within class to myself, TA’s and Mr Taylor. All students were excited to show off what they had worked on. Many of the students had family connections to various events- one year 7 student has a courtier of Anne Boleyn’s in their family history! Mr Taylor then picked a winner from the projects- Sophie Leonard (7.1) was our winner with a fantastic representation of the Suffragette Emily Davison running out in front of the Kings Horse at the Epsom Derby in 1913.
YEAR 7 OPEN EVENING PROJECTS
At the start of this academic year, Year 7 students were given an extended homework project to introduce their favourite historical event/time period in History. The aim of this was for the department to display them on Open Evening in October. The projects ran very successfully last year, with great feedback from perspective parents and pupils and this year did not disappoint.
Overall, Open Evening was a great success, the projects were well received and Year 7 helpers were happy to show them off to various visitors. Prospective parents and pupils also enjoyed our Medicine through Time Surgery on Open Evening. Here they could be diagnosed with an illness, then hear the treatments that would have been prescribed to them from 1250- up to present day. They then had the chance to vote on their preferred treatment- no surprise that the present day treatments won!
The History department are very impressed with the effort from Year 7 so far. They show incredible work ethic and it has been wonderful to teach so many budding historians.
Great job and keep it up!
A great amount of effort was shown by Year 7, with some amazing models created and dazzling posters. We had a wide variety of key events from the Great Fire of London, to World War One, to some more local history of the Westbury Chimney.
