SCIENCE

This is an exciting time to be a member of Matravers School in Science as we embark on the new AQA GSCE. Year 11 students will have mock exams in January and we have a few hints and tips to help them out:

1.

Use the revision guide. All of year 11 have been given a revision guide for Science to support their revision in the build up to their final GCSE’s. It includes all of the information they need to know to be successful in the exams, so get it out and use it when you are revising at home. And in class. And on the bus to school. Just everywhere.

2.

Command words. There is a lot to remember for a science exam, but interpreting the exam questions correctly and identifying the command word is vital. All year 11 will be looking at command words in tutor time.

3.

Exam Questions. Struggle with exams? Want to get better? Then only way of doing this is by practicing exam questions. Have a go at really hard questions and remember to use PLEC when answering them.

s

Plan - identify the keywords, command words and useful information. What is the exam question actually asking? Use a highlighter to identify these things.

s

Link - What Science topics do you need to use to fully answer the question. Which working scientifically skills will you need to include? Do you need to use any equations for calculations- which ones?

s

Express - Write down your answer using everything you identified in the link stage, include keywords, show all working out if this is a calculation question.

s

Check - Read back through the question and your answer - does what you have written actually answer the question? Have you included enough key points to pick up all marks on offer?

4.

Mini tests. Some recent studies have shown that if you test your brain frequently then you remember things a lot more effectively. Make some flash cards with keywords or questions on them and test yourself – that way you are less likely to forget it in the exam.

Follow the link https://www.doddlelearn.co.uk/app/login to access the website and log in.

All students have a unique log-in which is recorded in their planners.

YEAR 10 Year 10 have begun the Combined Science GCSE and it is important to recognise that what you are learning now, will be assessed in your Science exams at the end of Year 11. After nearly two terms, our year 10’s have now completed the Biology component for the course (for year 10). This is a big step forward and huge congratulations to everyone in year 10 for completing this. We will now be moving onto the Physics element and then Chemistry at the end of the year. As part of the Combined Science GCSE, all students have to complete some required practical’s which will be assessed through their exams. Use GCSE Bitesize to review these practical’s and share what you have learnt!

Keywords, keywords, keywords! Make sure that you know what they are, what they mean and how to use them in a sentence.

We know that exams can be a stressful time, so go and talk to your teacher if you are worried. Your teacher will know you as an individual, what your strengths and weaknesses are and how to help you to improve.

DOODLE: To support all students with their revision, they each have access to Doddle which is a website which contains revision presentations, interactive review quizzes and end of topic assessments.
