Visitors have been marvelling at EgyptÕs wondrous antiquities for thousands of years. Synonymous with pharaohs, pyramids and other treasures from its ancient civilisation, it is the oldest travel destination on earth, with Greek and Roman travellers coming in 430BC to wonder at some of the sights

that make it so appealing even now.

Today, modern life coexists with the legacies of the past, with road links taking you from scenery as diverse as the Nile Valleys to the Red Sea with its crystal-clear waters and marine life. Cairo, a major city since the time of the Pharaohs, whirring around a medieval core that has remained unchanged since the founding days of Islam never fails to make a strong impression. Upriver, Luxor, the site of ancient Thebes, is lined with warrens of opulent burial chambers and boasts some of the most formidable monuments in all antiquity. Further south at Aswan, even more geometrically imposing temples write a testament to the power of archaic gods and omnipotent pharaohs. It is here that the Nile is best explored by ancient sail, on a felucca at the hands of the prevailing currents and winds. Your holiday in Egypt can be as diverse as the land itself, visiting the Sphinx perhaps and the Great Pyramids, the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence. Alternatively, head for the Red Sea for some spectacular scuba-diving, snorkelling and family fun, or a romantic cruise down the River Nile is always recommended.
