Mulu is Sarawak’s largest national park containing a wealth of flowering plants, fungi, mosses and ferns, as well as 10 varieties of pitcher plant, which attract botanists and scientists from around the world. The park’s other remarkable feature is its many caves, including Clearwater Cave and Deer Cave where you should be able to witness the amazing spectacle of millions of bats leaving in search of their nightly food.

Day 7: Kuching – Kota Kinabalu Transfer to the airport for the flight to Kota Kinabalu, provincial capital and one of Malaysia’s most vibrant cities. On arrival, transfer to the Nexus Resort. A night tour is included, as upon dusk Kota Kinabalu’s waterfront is transformed into a bustling night market. Dinner at a local seafood restaurant. (B/D)
Day 8: Kota Kinabalu – Kinabalu National Park Travel in the morning to Poring Hot Springs (approx 3 hours drive). Highlights include taking a relaxing dip in one of the steaming hot mineral springs. Continue to Kinabalu National Park, lying below the astounding peak of Mount Kinabalu, where you will stay overnight at the Hill Lodge or similar. (B/L/D)
Day 9: Kinabalu National Park After an early breakfast transfer to Timpohon Gate at 1,524m above sea level and trek up to the second shelter along the mountain trail, with spectacular opportunities for bird watching. Return to Kota Kinabalu in the afternoon for overnight at Nexus Resort. (B/L)
Day 10: Kota Kinabalu – Kinabatangan River Fly from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan and transfer to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary where you can view these majestic apes in their natural habitat. Continue to Kinabatangan River – the second longest river in Malaysia, home to a vast diversity of animal and bird life. Stay at the Abai Jungle Lodge for 2 nights. (B/L/D)
Day 11: Abai Wake up by the calls of the local wildlife and take an early boat trip to Pitas Lake for birdwatching, which may include rare species such as the critically endangered Storm’s stork, Sunda ground cuckoo, stork billed kingfisher, brahminy kite, crested serpent eagle, greater coucal, red-crowned barbet, black and yellow broadbill and white-rumped shama. Visit the nearby Abai village, where lunch will be served together with one of the families. (B/L/D)
Day 12: Sandakan – London Return to Sandakan by boat, then transfer to the airport for your return flight with Malaysia Airlines to London Heathrow, via Kuala Lumpur. (B/L)

About 8 hectares in size, Selingan (Turtle Island), the largest of the islands in the Selingan Marine National Park, houses the park’s headquarters, a turtle hatchery and tourist accommodation in the form of Park Chalets. Accommodation is basic but comfortable and allows visitors to stay and witness the night-time arrivals of the magnificent turtles as they come ashore to lay their eggs. The chalets have air-conditioning and a shared bathroom and toilet. A restaurant is also available for visitors to enjoy hot meals on the island.
