110 Namibia

■ Fish River Canyon ■ Skeleton Coast ■ Etosha National Park ■ Damaraland ■ Sossusvlei & Sesriem ■ Swakopmund ■ Khaudom Game Reserve

Wedged between the Kalahari and the South Atlantic, Namibia has a striking diversity of cultures and national origins. A photographer’s dream – it boasts wild seascapes, rugged mountains, lonely deserts, stunning wildlife, colonial cities and nearly unlimited elbow room.

A place of quiet, uncluttered beauty, it is one of the last remaining unspoiled areas of the planet. A predominantly arid country, Namibia can be divided into four main topographical regions: Northern Namibia is home to Damaraland, one of the country’s most scenic areas, and Etosha, the country’s unmissable national park, with an amazing array of wildlife. In Southern Namibia you’ll find the famous red landscape of the Namib Desert and Naukluft National Park, home to some of the weirdest and rarest plant and animal species in the world. Here also is Sossusvlei, home of the world’s highest sand dunes (up to 400m high) the Namib Desert and coastal plains in the west, the eastward-sloping Central Plateau, the Kalahari along the borders with South Africa and Botswana and the densely wooded bushveld. Namibia has some of the world’s grandest national parks, ranging from Etosha National Park, to the dune fields and desert plains of the Namib-Naukluft Park in Western Namibia. Windhoek, in the Central Highlands, is the country’s geographical heart and commercial nerve centre, with an ethnic mix of people, while surfers and beach-lovers won’t want to miss Swakopmund.
