Day in the life Hitting the road
Claudio Zanobini became a Mac Tools franchisee for the Exeter region in 2010. Here, he describes a typical day…
7.20am Armed with a travel mug of coff ee, cashbox and card machine, and after a quick look in the mirror to make sure I look presentable, I leave the house and drive over to where I’d securely parked my Mac Tools van overnight.
7.30am
Although I’ve usually checked I am well stocked the night before and given it a good clean out, I like to give the van one last check to also make sure it’s presentable. I like to be sure I have the latest products on display, as well as the classics, which are always in demand. Then, it’s a case of opening the laptop, checking my schedule, and heading off to the fi rst garage.
8.00am
Once I’m in the van, it’s showtime – time to make some business! I carry a selection from the van into the garages, and stride in confi dently with my bag full of tools. I usually attract quite a crowd around me, especially if it is a big garage, which can make you feel a bit like a celebrity as they all want to see what I’ve got. Then it’s on to the next customer… and the next, to show off the best tools of the trade from Mac Tools, DEWALT, Facom and Expert! The guys love to come into the van and have a look for themselves!
10.15am
Pit stop! After all that talking and showing off my products, I am ready for a good cuppa, plus a quick check of emails, to make sure I stay on top of the admin side of my business.
10.30am
I am back in the van and making my way to my next few customers before lunch. Because of the locality of where they are, I can usually manage to see about three or four customers an hour. It’s a case of trying to sell something – but even if I don’t sell anything, that’s OK, because I’m still talking about my job and the tools I love.
12.30pm Time for lunch! The advantage of having the laptop with me means that even
though my showroom is a van, I always have my mobile offi ce with me. This gives me time for replying to emails, making calls, and checking against the targets I have set myself.
1.00pm I’m refreshed and ready to get back on the road to meet more customers. I love being with them, even though I’m only there for about 10 to 15 minutes! It means I see the best side of them and, over time, we build up a great rapport. Every day is diff erent.
5.30pm
Back to the security of my van’s overnight home. I tidy the showroom in the back of the van, replacing everything I have sold and looking at whether I need to rotate the display. If the van looks the same each
week, customers soon become bored and stop coming out to have a look. Preparation is key!
6.30pm It’s back home to check the daily report, reorder anything I am low on, and sort the banking from the day’s sales. Once I have fi nalised all of this, I can then usually enjoy a relaxing evening with my family, knowing that I’ve had great conversations about my favourite subject, tools, and hopefully made some sales along the way. I really enjoy my career as a Mac Tools franchisee – it’s so much fun!
