What has been the biggest challenge so far?
The biggest challenge has been running my own business while being a single mum – but there is never a challenge too hard. I would also say passing my exams; when I actually passed I couldn’t stop crying!

Why did you decide to become a Swimkidz franchisee?
I used to take my son to lessons with another company and transferred to Swimkidz as I preferred their ethos. After a year we moved to Milton Keynes for my partner’s job, so I approached Trish about starting a franchise in that area. I had never taught swimming before but I was reassured that the extensive training offered would enable me to fulfil my ambitions.
How was the initial training? I was very nervous about the training as I’m dyslexic and haven’t taken an exam for over 35 years. I ended up doing eight exams, which was scary, but Trish and the other examiners were amazing and gave so much support throughout. I really couldn’t have done this without the support I got.
I have now done all my swimming qualifications. I love being a teacher and running my own business.
How much support do you get from head office? Where do I start? I had so much support – it was great. Everyone pulls together and helps each other; Trish is amazing and helps me in my business and personal life. When you call head office they are always there. If they can’t help you, they put you in touch with someone who can.

What are the advantages of working mainly in the school terms? I have a pool that I teach at all year round, which is nice, as I know my staff struggle to have six weeks off in the summer. I love having the time off, as it gives me a chance to spend time with my son and catch up on admin. It’s also advantageous, as you can go to children’s events in the summer holidays and attend events to promote your business.
How do you see your business growing in the future? I want to grow my business, even though I am one of the top-performing franchisees. I’m currently looking to expand into new areas as the demand for our lessons grows, and I have a never-ending waiting list, mostly generated by referrals.
What advice you would give to someone considering investing in a Swimkidz franchise?
I would tell them to dive in and take the plunge, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. It’s so rewarding realising your own potential and watching your business grow.
How have you found trading so far? What benefits are there to working in this industry? The main benefits are doing something you really love and taking control of your life. Working with children is amazing and seeing how you help them grow and develop their swimming and life-saving techniques is amazing.
I’ve just signed my second five- year agreement and my business is very successful. It hasn’t been without challenges, but the network of support staff and franchisees means the answers are always there.
Would you recommend franchising to others and, in particular, in the kids sector? Working with children helps to keep you feeling young and energised, and our Swimkidz lessons provide children with so many essential swimming skills.
I would recommend franchising as it
provides a network of professionals to draw ideas from. I have always enjoyed working with children but never thought I would be able to teach – I truly love what I do!
