he Subway brand recently opened its 2,500th store in the UK and Ireland, propelling its plans to increase the number of stores in the region to 3,000 by


2020 and creating around 5,000 new jobs. Kurtis and Daniel Berry, both 21, are twin


brothers and two of the newest franchisees to join Subway’s global franchise network. Based in Kent, the brothers purchased their fi rst store in Maidstone, with a team of six staff members.


Daniel says: “Both my brother and I are passionate about food and we love the pace that the quick-service restaurant sector brings; it keeps your working days fresh and lively, which, in turn, keeps you motivated and inspired. We’re very ambitious and our goal was always to operate our own business, which is why we started researching opportunities and discovered franchising with the Subway brand.”


New Subway franchisees are provided


with robust support and training to get their new business ventures up and running. Every new franchisee attends a comprehensive two-week training course at the UK and Ireland’s Subway training centre in Cambridge. In addition, regional development agents provide support and assistance on the ground with site selection, leasing, operations and store development. There are also regular opportunities to meet with fellow franchisees and share best practice.


Following the training support, operating


the store together as brothers was a recipe for success for Daniel and Kurtis, as Kurtis explains: “We are extremely close and work really well as a team, so we knew going into this franchising venture together would work. “We have a very similar mindset when it comes to running a business and we’re also quite competitive. During our Subway franchisee training I scored 100 per cent and my brother scored one less mark than me – we still bring it up! Our competitive edge is what drives us forward and we’ve worked out a business strategy that works for us. For example, I like working early shifts and he prefers evenings, so it’s the perfect mix!


“Our advice for anyone thinking of joining a franchise would be to do your research so you can make a fully informed decision, and then just go for it. There’s always an element of risk when starting


out on your own, but this makes success all the more rewarding. The benefi t of joining a reputable franchise, like Subway, is that you’re working within a tried-and- tested business model and have a support system in place, which makes it easier to take the big leap!”
