What did you do before franchising? I’ve been in recruitment most of my career. Prior to Select, I spent 17 years with the Step Ahead recruitment consultancy in the City of London, where I held several senior positions, most recently as managing director.

Why did you invest in a franchise in the white-collar sector? To be honest, I wasn’t looking for an opportunity outside of recruitment, so when the opportunity to establish a Select Appointments franchise in Croydon appeared, it was too good to pass up. I had considered setting up on my own, but Select has a great reputation in the recruitment field; it is one of the most respected players and the brand will really open doors for me. It will handle the majority of the back office functions, leaving me free to build relationships with local businesses, which is the bit I enjoy most.
How did you find the initial training and support? What is the ongoing support like? It’s been excellent. They’ve really tailored the support to my specific needs, so that instead of spending time on the things I’ve been doing for years, they’ve shown me how and why their business model and systems work.
How have you found trading so far? So far, I am really pleased. I made a few
very early placements, and I’ve made some great contacts and my team is looking good. Select puts in a lot of marketing work ahead of each franchisee’s launch to make sure you get off to a good start.
In what ways has your life changed? Well, I’m still doing recruitment, but I’m the one making all the decisions and I’m building a solid business for my future – it’s a good feeling!
Would you recommend franchising to others? Absolutely, but you need to make sure you choose the right one for you. It’s not a decision to make overnight; you need to do a lot of research and make sure you understand the relationship you are going to have. Building a business in any sector is going to be hard work – much harder than any salaried role – but there are rewards there if you are prepared to put in the effort consistently.
What are your short- and long-term plans for the future?
My priority is going out, visiting local companies and getting a good idea of what their working culture is. Croydon is a fantastic town in which to set up a business, as there is so much happening in terms of regeneration and new retail and commercial developments. I’m starting with two consultants as per the Select franchise model, but I’d like to take that up to six in the next two to three years.
