Devon & Cornwall – G7 Summit Policing Support Introduction

In June 2021, the UK hosted the G7 Summit in Cornwall, requiring extensive police security planning. Description

The event posed unique challenges as it occurred during the early aftermath of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The force was given minimal time to plan the security operation for this high-profile event in a remote rural area. The deployment involved thousands of officers from across the country, significantly impacting routine policing within Devon and Cornwall.

Resolution BACK TO NATIONAL VIEW South West

The Police Federation was actively involved in the planning process to ensure members’ rights under police regulations were upheld. The Federation successfully negotiated appropriate compensation for members required to work rest days (RDs) and addressed concerns over shift changes with less than 15 days’ notice.

Outcome

The Federation’s efforts resulted in a successful outcome for hundreds of Devon and Cornwall members, ensuring fair treatment and compensation.

Dorset – Highlighting Local Policing Challenges to MPs

Introduction

The Dorset Police Federation influenced local Members of Parliament (MPs) to address the challenges facing local policing.

Description

The primary issue raised was the funding formula, which disproportionately disadvantages Dorset as a smaller force. As a popular tourist destination, Dorset experiences significant increases in population throughout the year, yet the funding formula does not account for these fluctuations. This creates a misleading picture of the resources required for effective policing in the region.

Resolution

Dorset Federation, alongside national colleagues, held meetings with the majority of Dorset MPs in Westminster to advocate for a review of the funding formula.

Outcome

This influencing effort prompted Dorset MPs to raise the issue with the Policing Minister. Discussions and debates on this subject remain ongoing at a national level.

Wiltshire – Stonehenge Bypass Funding Withdrawal

Introduction

The Government withdrew funding for the Stonehenge Bypass project, impacting police resourcing and officer assignments.

Description

Strategic-level meetings were held with the Chief Officer Group (COG) to address the implications of the funding withdrawal. These included discussions on police regulations, the 90-day ruling, and the reallocation of affected officers.

Resolution

The Federation ensured that all 45 officers impacted by the project’s cancellation were treated fairly, with their skill sets and roles carefully matched to suitable new postings.

Outcome

This process resulted in a positive outcome, reducing dissatisfaction among affected officers, and ensuring a smoother transition to their new roles.
