Avon & Somerset – Ill-Health Retirement Process Support

Introduction

The ill-health retirement (IHR) process in Avon & Somerset led to officers being placed on half pay due to prolonged delays.

Description

Several officers undergoing the IHR process faced financial hardship as the extended duration resulted in their pay being reduced to half. This issue raised significant concerns about fairness and the welfare of affected officers.

Resolution

The Police Federation engaged in negotiations with HR to address the delays and advocate for officers to remain on full pay during the IHR process.

Outcome

The negotiations were successful, ensuring that officers retained their full pay throughout the IHR process, mitigating financial stress and supporting their welfare during this challenging period.

Avon & Somerset – Arrest of a Member from Another Force

Introduction

An officer arrested an individual from another police force based on intelligence suggesting the person was driving under the influence.

Description

The officer faced gross misconduct proceedings, with allegations that the arrest was made without sufficient intelligence to justify the action.

Resolution

The Police Federation representative provided support and guidance throughout the process. Following a detailed review, the officer was found not guilty of any misconduct.

Outcome

This case was handled through a written response rather than the typical interview process. The Federation Branch emphasised that had standard procedures been followed from the outset, gross misconduct proceedings would not have been initiated. This case prompted a policy change within the local Professional Standards Department to prevent similar issues in the future.
