Northumbria – Early Day Motion on Police Pay Cuts Introduction

In 2022, following local engagement meetings with Labour MP Emma Lewell-Buck, the Chair of the Northumbria Federation collaborated with the national officer to draft an Early Day Motion (EDM). This EDM highlighted the concerns of the Police Federation of England and Wales (PFEW) regarding the Police Remuneration Review Body (PRRB) and drew attention to the 25% real terms pay cut experienced by police officers since 2010.

Description

The Federation used engagement with MP Lewell-Buck to emphasise the long-standing pay concerns affecting officers. The drafted EDM aimed to bring these issues to the forefront of parliamentary discussions, advocating for fairer remuneration and a revaluation of the PRRB’s approach.

Resolution

The Early Day Motion was successfully tabled in Parliament, raising awareness of police pay issues and adding momentum to calls for improved compensation. Outcome

The efforts contributed to improved pay rises for police officers in 2023 and 2024, reflecting progress in addressing the pay disparity highlighted in the motion.
