Dorset – Establishing Independent Federation Premises

Introduction

The Dorset Police Federation, historically located within the force estate at HQ, faced challenges with space and privacy during the development of a new HQ building.

Description

The planned HQ redevelopment significantly restricted the provision of space and privacy for the Federation office. Recognising the need for a secure and independent location, the Federation undertook a comprehensive scoping process to identify suitable premises across the county.

Resolution BACK TO NATIONAL VIEW South West

After locating an appropriate site, financial options were explored, and a business case was presented to the National Federation Finance Committee. Funding was approved for the purchase of independent office premises.

Outcome

The new Dorset Federation office provides members with a secure, discreet, and professional space for conduct interviews, ill-health meetings, branch meetings, training, and seminars. The premises also reduce costs previously incurred for hiring external venues, ensuring a sustainable and tangible base for the Federation’s operations, benefitting current and future members.

Gloucestershire – Financial Compensation for Major Events Introduction

In January 2024, the Federation successfully negotiated improved financial compensation for officers working at major sporting events in the county.

Description

The Constabulary provides policing support to major racing events organised by the Jockey Club, particularly the Cheltenham Festival, under a long-standing charging agreement. Traditionally, officers were compensated through a mix of rest day and working day rates.

In late 2023, the DCC initiated a review of this policy with the intent to resource the event entirely through cancelled rest days, reducing the compensation offered to officers.

Resolution

The Federation made direct representations to the DCC, emphasising the historical context of policing the event and the cost-of-living challenges faced by officers. As a result, not only was the existing compensation agreement upheld, but it was expanded to include officers covering night-time economy duties.

Outcome

This successful negotiation demonstrates the Federation’s ability to advocate for and secure better working conditions and financial arrangements for its members, ensuring their efforts are appropriately recognised and rewarded.
