RESEARCH

Who we are: A team of subject matter experts in research and academia, supporting the NSO and NCO with evidence-based research to support effective influencing and negotiation on behalf of the membership.

Our work includes:

Pay and Morale Survey – This is our flagship survey and is used in a variety of ways to show how officers are feeling about a whole host of aspects of their work from mental health support to the pressure they are feeling in their operational roles. The survey results are broken down to enable individual branches to use the data locally, into bodies such as the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) to show the state of affairs within the workforce as a whole, influencing policy changes and advocating for better working conditions and support for police officers. Because this data is collected annually, it also enables us to have statistically valid trend indicators.

Economic Dashboard – Our economist uses a variety of sources to produce invaluable reports on how the economic situation impacts our members. As a member, the output that you may be most familiar with is the “real term drop in pay” figure for officers. This uses a sophisticated combination of data from sources such as the Home Office (HO), the Office for National Statistics (ONS), and the UK House Price Index (UK HPI) to obtain data on inflation indices, house price indicators across various regions, police funding, and others. This is an important example of the rigour of creating a figure that is statistically valid and evidenced so that it can be used with confidence in our interactions with various government and policing groups.

Working alongside academic, research institutions, and think tanks – We are often approached by universities and other research bodies to work in collaboration with them. We choose our collaborations carefully, focussing only on research that will drive meaningful changes for our members. Recently, the uniform survey was a good example of this, as we partnered with the University of Lancaster to gain the views of our membership on the quality of the uniform and PPE.
