GMP – Maternity leave Introduction

In a sensitive case, a member delivered a live birth at 22 weeks, and the baby tragically passed before reaching the 24-week threshold, meaning the member was not eligible for maternity leave under current regulations. The member was distressed, and the force was uncertain how to respond.

Description

The member reached out for guidance. Clarification on the regulations and advice on temporary solutions was provided, such as using Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) as interim support. We liaised with senior officers, HR, and local leaders to ensure the member received welfare support and as close to full maternity entitlements as possible.

Resolution BACK TO NATIONAL VIEW North West

The member was granted paid special leave equivalent to the usual maternity period, with SMP overpayments written off. A compassionate protocol was developed for similar future cases.

Outcome

The member felt fully supported and was able to return to work, citing the Federation’s intervention as essential to her recovery. This compassionate approach will continue until formal regulations are updated.

Lancashire – Baby Bundles Introduction

Due to a lack of HR resources and limited maternity support, the Lancashire Federation introduced the “Baby Bundle” programme in November 2021 for pregnant members.

Description

Each Baby Bundle includes a durable baby-changing backpack filled with useful items and a Q&A leaflet addressing frequently asked questions about maternity. The initiative aims to celebrate new parents and provide essential information.

Resolution

The Baby Bundle, valued at £30, is assembled by office staff and includes a proforma for subscription adjustments during maternity leave.

Outcome

Over 106 Baby Bundles have been distributed, providing reassurance and practical support to members as they prepare for maternity leave.

Cheshire – 12-Hour Shifts Introduction

In 2019, the Cheshire force proposed a shift to 12-hour shifts for all response officers, including night shifts, aiming to implement the change within three months. This proposal received mixed reactions, with some officers supportive of the 4-on-4-off system, while others voiced concerns about fatigue and work-life balance.

Description

The Federation conducted surveys and focus groups to gauge sentiment on the shift pattern and worked with branch leadership to identify key issues, including fatigue, compliance with police regulations, and working time directives. A working group was established to provide feedback and act as a “critical friend” to the force.

Resolution

The 12-hour shift pattern was implemented in 2022, with adjustments made for officers unable to work the new schedule. An action plan was set for the first 12 months to improve provisions for night workers, enhance training on compensatory rest, and empower supervisors to enforce breaks.

Outcome

The force now has a comprehensive template for evaluating shift pattern requests, including health screenings for night workers and tools for supervisors to address fatigue and burnout.
