North Yorkshire – Engagement with Newly Elected MPs
Introduction
Following the general election in July 2024, introductory letters were sent to all newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to arrange meetings and provide an overview of the Federation’s work.
Description
The letters outlined key national issues affecting police officers, including a 20% real-terms reduction in pay and rising frustration among officers, which has prompted discussions about potential balloting for industrial rights. The Federation also requested face-to-face meetings to address members’ concerns, discuss national campaigns, and encourage parliamentary support for critical initiatives.
Resolution
A series of meetings have been arranged and held with local MPs to discuss these matters in detail.
Outcome BACK TO NATIONAL VIEW North East
Thus far, meetings have been confirmed with four local MPs. Topics for discussion include the Pay and Morale Survey, industrial rights, and support for the Fair Pay Campaign, which advocates for pay restoration. Additional national initiatives, such as #SimplifyDG6 and the introduction of time limits for processes, will also be addressed to secure broader parliamentary backing.
South Yorkshire – Visible Tattoos Policy Introduction
In 2018, a force implemented a policy requiring all visible tattoos to be covered for public-facing officers, which was widely criticised across the organisation.
Description
The Federation worked collaboratively with unions to highlight the financial and practical implications of the policy, particularly during hot weather. Comparisons with other police forces and emergency services revealed that this force was an outlier in its approach.
Resolution
The policy was amended to allow the removal of coverings during summer months. Further feedback during staff morale and wellbeing reviews led to a complete reversal of the policy in 2023.
Outcome
The force policy was overturned, aligning with modern practices and improving staff wellbeing.
