From reading about the lives of the fascinating characters in Eliot’s poetry, it was clear to me that they are all products of their environments, but that the worlds they occupy, although polar opposites in terms of wealth, can be equally cruel and lonely. Eliot’s vivid imagery and use of poetic techniques, such as direct speech, really helped me to understand these characters. This made their difficulties all the more upsetting, and the exploration of his poetry all the more challenging, yet worthwhile.
