In the last two lines of the poem, the slave family lament their treatment – the possible loss of their home and their potential sale to the highest bidder: ‘How soon and unexpectedly cut off/ Many, many, very many times.’ These lines are also taken from Part One (‘I have prayed for those people/ Many, many, very many times.’) Here, the repetition serves to remind us of the hundreds, even thousands, of similar stories. Slaves were completely powerless and could be ‘cut off’ and separated from each other at a moment’s notice, all at the whim of their owners. And this happened repeatedly. This affecting poem is effective in giving a voice to those who were silenced, by ‘taking’ them moral code that they did not follow.
