INTERVIEW
TP: As the head of BASF personal care in Europe, what keeps you up at night? TK: I never thought we were going to go through such a period with everything that happened in the past two years, two years and a half. It’s a lot. What keeps me awake at night currently are the geopolitical conflicts because this is impacting so many of us, so many families and that’s just sad to see it. Of course, it is also impacting
our businesses and bringing them even further uncertainties regarding the natural gas situation and raw material supply overall. On top of that, the impact
of climate change and how this will be in the years ahead is also something that keeps me awake at night, despite the fact that we do have alternatives and we have already worked on that. Those are probably the biggest
topics: geopolitical conflicts and climate change. They affect all of us as human beings and our families in this world and, of course, our business as well.
TP: How have the summer droughts around the Rhine affected your production?
“We are moving in the direction of finding new resources and new raw materials that allow us to have bio-based, sustainable products together
with performance ” Tatiana Kalman - Head of BASF’s Personal Care Europe regional business unit
TK: We have factories around the Rhine, so we use the river as a means of transport for some of our raw materials and also some of our final products. But we had a drought in
2018 that was more or less similar to what we saw this summer. We worked on alternatives and
we have used alternatives this year. The 2018 situation was, in
fact, even worse because we had no alternative.
TP: How has the situation in Ukraine affected the personal care business? Are you putting up your prices to compensate for the higher gas prices? We are doing both. We are working to way offset internally, finding alternatives to compensate it internally and when it’s not possible we need to pass it via price rises. PC
