adequate efficacy in the battle against frizz. Frizzy hair can be controlled, at least temporarily, with the daily application of high- quality anti-frizz shampoos and conditioners, rinse-off products, sprays, hair oils or leave-in serums. However, many solutions produce a

lasting oily and sticky feel, and sometimes even a residue or coating. This can leave the hair feeling and appearing dirty, greasy and unnatural, causing consumers to wash their hair even more frequently—thus, perpetuating the frizz cycle. Keeping the hair feeling as natural as possible is of the utmost importance to hair care formulators and consumers alike.

Solvay frizz therapy Solvay’s objective was to address anti- frizz challenges and develop a product with high humidity resistance that provides durable shape and long-lasting discipline for straight or curly hair. Not only does such an accomplishment save time and money, but it

also has the added benefit of convenience and enhanced safety for consumers, promoting hair health and reducing the damage that results from neglect. In April, Solvay launched an innovative

ingredient to thoroughly address these anti- frizz challenges: Polycare® Frizz Therapy - hereafter known as the anti-frizz agent - which is a synthetic low-viscosity cationic polymer. For maximum efficacy, this polymer is

ideally suited for preventative leave-in treatments and creams before the use of hot tools or styling instruments. This innovative anti-frizz agent has even demonstrated good anti-frizz abilities in leave-on products, creams and sprays. The anti-frizz agent is supplied under a

liquid concentrated form (active matter 32-34%) and is readily soluble in water, alcohols, glycols and other common solvents. With outstanding properties for anti-frizz formulations, the anti-frizz agent delivers flexible hold properties without any negative side effects, which makes it eligible for daily use.

How it works As a low-viscosity cationic polymer, the anti- frizz agent utilizes advanced technology to counteract common causes of frizz. Hair carries a slightly negative charge when wet, and the more the hair is damaged, the more negatively charged it becomes. Conversely, cationic polymers and surfactants are positively charged entities. Therefore, through static attraction, cationics work by neutralizing the negatively charged hair surface to minimize frizz and flyaways.

Key benefits With years of experience and expertise in the development of personal and hair care ingredients, Solvay is dedicated to engineering the most advanced hair-care solutions on the market. The anti-frizz agent offers a variety of critical benefits, is REACH compliant and is listed under the Inventory of Existing Cosmetic Ingredients in China (IECIC). This frizz-defy product exhibits: excellent

anti-frizz efficacy; high-humidity resistance for up to three days; heat protection; non-greasy, non-sticky properties; and daily-use ability. Additionally, products formulated with the anti-frizz agent result in: no-flakes; no build- up; and no cardboard effect.

Day 0 Day 1

Efficacy analysis In an instrumental assessment, solutions formulated with the anti-frizz agent demonstrated strongly evident bulk volume reduction, bringing comparable performance to the highest market performer. The bulk volume decreases with increasing the anti-frizz agent concentration, and solutions formulated with this polymer have an ascending dose- response when stats are considered (Figure 1). In a visual assessment of the efficacy of

the anti-frizz agent, tresses were treated with the polymer for a sensorial analysis. Using a textured hair tress type 3 (on the Andre Walker scale) as the initial subject, the anti-frizz agent resulted in disciplined fibres, minimal stickiness, and no greasy feel (Figure 2).

Superior heat protection In a procedure designed to measure the quality of heat protection that the anti-frizz agent offers, mid-brown Virgin Caucasian Hair tresses were treated with the polymer at a dosage of 1% in water. Then, the hair was blow-dried and flat ironed at 230°C. This cycle was repeated
