INTERVIEW

TP: You have mentioned there is a trend around the individuality of the consumer, as consumers become more savvy about the sort of products that suit their own skin or hair. How does a company like Dow that makes a vast array of products deal with that? IA: It actually helps us tap into our expertise of scientists and formulators. For example, one of the things we are using regularly is high-throughput capabilities. High-throughput capabilities is where you have artificial intelligence doing a series of assays; combinations of formulations of two or three
ingredients. You do different concentrations, different hydrations and then you can test that on a substrate or an application. For example we could explore the grease-removing power of a shampoo and change parameters to create variations from high-foaming to low-foaming possibilities. To make recommendations to
our customers, sometimes you have to do a very large number of assays in very short time. So, we can use high-throughput capability, which we’ve been using significantly in the hygiene space - body wash and shampoos.
So, customisation is something
that we see as an advantage for us because we have the capabilities to provide recommendations and ideas to our customers.
TP: How difficult it is to balance the sustainability, performance and price? IA: I think that it is an important question. It’s not difficult to have high performing and sustainable materials, the difficulty is when you are looking for a one-for- one substitution. It can be very difficult to have high performance, sustainability and low price with one form of change.
New materials can be
superior versus the incumbent. The challenge then is how do you adapt a whole formulation and a whole chassis to that new ingredient. That is really where the challenge lies. Due to our capabilities I
mentioned before, we have been creating what I would say is really strong knowledge about where the gaps are in a formulation, and we use new materials to overcome that. It’s about an ecosystem of formulation. If you have the right expertise in formulation design, you can easily overcome the challenges.
