French cosmetic exports hit record €19.2bn in 2022 with 19% growth
The French cosmetics industry saw record exports worth €19.2bn ($20.6bn) in 2022 with growth of 18.8% on the previous year. FEBEA (Fédération des
Entreprises de la Beauté) said the cosmetics sector now ranks as France’s third largest exporter behind only aeronautics and wines & spirits. The fragrances category saw
growth of 30.2% while make-up and facial care category recorded an increase of 11.6%. These two categories of products together represented exports worth around €16.5bn last year, more than 85% of the sector total. The top three French exports
were skin care products (creams, serums, make-up removers etc.); lipstick; and eye make-up products (mascara etc.). The European Union remains
the leading destination for exports
of French cosmetic products, followed by the United States and China. Exports to the Middle East are also experiencing strong growth. Sales to the EU grew 24.2%
compared to 2021, driven in large part by a 33% annual growth in fragrance exports. In total, the European Union
attracts nearly 37% of total French
exports of cosmetic products, with Germany the main market: it imports €1.9bn of French cosmetics, up 21% compared to 2021.
The American market recorded
an increase of 28% in 2022. With €2.3bn of sales, the United States climbed this year to first place on the podium of countries importing French cosmetics, ahead of China.
China imported €1.954bn of
French cosmetic products last year, a small growth rate of 3.1% explained by Covid restrictions. Exports to the Middle East rose 33.8% on 2021 with growth of 41.8% in the United Arab Emirates and 20.4% in Saudi Arabia. “We are very happy with these
excellent results. They demonstrate that, despite the current economic and geopolitical uncertainties, despite the supply difficulties and the cost increases with which companies are confronted, French cosmetics retains a strong power of attractiveness in the world,” said FEBEA General Delegate Emmanuel Guichard. “It has been able to reinvent
itself to meet the new expectations of consumers, in particular by offering ever more sustainable and environmentally friendly products,” he added.
Croda to acquire Korean actives maker Solus Biotech
British speciality chemicals maker Croda is to acquire South Korean actives producer Solus Biotech for 350 billion won ($277m). Solus, which employs 95
people at its R&D centre in Bundag near Seoul and its production centre in Iksan, is a leading supplier of naturally derived powder ceramides. The number of new personal
care products containing ceramides has doubled over the last five years, principally for skin
care but increasingly for hair care formulations. Croda said the acquisition
provides access to Solus’ existing biotech-derived ceramide and phospholipid technologies, as well as its emerging capabilities in natural retinol. Solus is developing
biotech-derived retinol, which is a sustainable alternative to synthetically derived retinol. “This acquisition will
significantly strengthen Croda’s Beauty Actives portfolio and
increases its exposure to targeted prestige segments. Located in South Korea, Solus expands Croda’s Asian manufacturing capability and will create a new biotechnology R&D hub in the region,” it said in a statement. The acquisition is subject to
regulatory approval. “This is a strategic bullseye for
Croda, consolidating our position as a global leader in supplying sustainable, natural actives for personal care across three critical technology platforms of peptides,
ceramides and retinol,” said Croda CEO Steve Foots. “It significantly enhances
our sustainable biotechnology capabilities and adds a North Asia manufacturing and innovation facility, providing a springboard to premium markets in Asia and beyond. I am especially excited about their brilliant technology, with Solus bringing rich IP and proprietary know-how that we will be able to deliver to customers globally,” he added.
Biolie opens first North America office in Houston
French plant-based cosmetic active producer Biolie has opened its first North American office as it looks to expand in the US market. The sales and support office in
Houston, Texas is led by technical sales engineer Jordan Yeboah (pictured), who will be Biolie’s first representative based in the US. Yeboah will be able to support

natural and upcycled ingredients. Biolie’s new office in the
US will promote and provide a variety of Cosmos-approved and Cosmos-certified plant-based cosmetic ingredients, obtained via a solvent-free enzymatic extraction eco-process.
“This is an opportunity for
the company to get closer to its current American customers and
starting partnerships with new ones. Currently 40% of Biolie’s turnover comes from exports, of which only 6% from the United States,” a spokewoman said. “The company’s intention is to
expand further into the US market, the largest cosmetic market in the world, with the support of ChemSpec, Biolie’s exclusive US distributor,” she added.
