With a commonly recommended oral care


use level of up to 0.3% or higher, the cosmetic hygiene ingredient is a viable solution for oral hygiene as part of cosmetic products. This needs to be evaluated case by case depending on a suitable masking taste profile.


Oral biofilm model (ex vivo microbiome) While the S. mutans biofilm studies represent a single species result, Symrise has developed a representative oral biofilm model which is closer to real life and thus can explore effects on complex natural microbial communities. Dental plaque biofilm organisms are grown on


hydroxyapatite (a mineral found in tooth enamel) and model oral biofilms on tooth surfaces. The influence of the cosmetic hygiene ingredient has been evaluated using this oral biofilm representing a natural oral microbiome. The biofilm activity was determined via


fluorescence. Three independent experiments were performed starting with saliva collection as a source for the microorganisms. Each experiment included four treatments of two minutes with different concentrations (ranging from 0.0% to 0.3%) of the cosmetic hygiene ingredient in a saline buffer. The biofilm activity was determined 18 hours


after the last treatment. As control, a pure saline buffer was used, and the biofilm activity of the control condition was defined as 100% relative biofilm activity. As a result, the activity of the oral biofilm

decreased with increasing concentrations of the cosmetic hygiene ingredient (Figure 2). There is already a clear effect visible with a concentration of 0.15% cosmetic hygiene ingredient and a concentration of 0.3% cosmetic hygiene ingredient reduces the activity of biofilm by almost half.

comparison to placebo (Table 2). For this evaluation, 35 healthy subjects used the mouthwash twice a day (morning and evening) for 28 days after a two-week pre- conditioning phase, in which they were only allowed to use a standard toothpaste. The oral odour was evaluated through


sensory assessment by trained experts rating (score 0 (no odour) to 5 (severe odour)) and via analytical methods using a sulfide detector (Halimeter) on the first day of the test and after seven and 28 days of use.
