Mechanics and Narratives
Building on the use of characters, we’ve introduced a feature called the “Catalyst,” where characters enter gameplay and occupy fixed reel positions. Catalysts enhance gameplay by collecting cash-on-reels, upgrading symbols, or triggering
bonuses. A standout example is Voodoo Jackpots, which we’ll showcase at ICE 2025.
characters, or “personas,” are more than visual elements - they serve as anchors for the game’s identity. Players now associate games with their main theme or character, and when these characters actively assist, such as helping players achieve higher wins or unlocking more frequent bonuses, they create a stronger emotional connection. Tis makes games more interactive and dynamic, ensuring something exciting is always happening to engage the player.
What new methods is Light & Wonder utilising to design bonus rounds and features that complement a game theme?
Building on the use of characters, we’ve introduced a feature called the “Catalyst,” where characters enter gameplay and occupy fixed reel positions. Catalysts enhance gameplay by collecting cash-on-reels, upgrading symbols, or triggering bonuses. A standout example is Voodoo Jackpots, which we’ll showcase at ICE 2025. Another exciting evolution is providing multiple ways to trigger bonuses. For example, a traditional Hold & Spin bonus, typically activated with six or more specific symbols during the base game, can now also be triggered during free game bonuses. Tis innovation creates a feature-in-feature experience, immersing players in endless layers of excitement.
How are technology advancements expanding the scope for slots to offer narrative-driven storytelling?
Advancements in technology are transforming the way players experience storytelling in slots by extending the game’s narrative beyond the screen. For instance, edge LED lights on cabinet silhouettes provide an immersive layer to gameplay, dynamically changing colours, flashing, or dimming to mirror in-game events. A prime example of this evolution is our Horizon cabinet, where the game graphics extend beyond the
traditional screen, interacting seamlessly with surrounding MLEDs. Tis creates a multi-dimensional visual experience that pulls players deeper into the story.
As we move forward, game designers are increasingly leveraging this interaction between on-screen elements and external hardware to create richer, more engaging experiences. By blending advanced technology with creative storytelling, we’re opening up new possibilities for delivering immersive narratives that captivate players like never before.
