A challenging trek combining Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro On this challenging trek we tackle Tanzania’s two highest peaks: Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. We acclimatise on our hike to Meru’s volcanic cone then we climb Kilimanjaro via the Rongai route on the mountains northern fl ank. Making the summit push at midnight we reach Uhuru Peak (5895m) by morning to enjoy exhilarating views over the ice fi elds.
12 day tour itinerary
Day 1 Join tour Arusha. Day 2 Arusha National Park Start the ascent of Tanzania’s second highest peak Mount Meru, looking for giraffes, elephants and buffalos. Reach Miriakamba Hut (2520m). Days 3/4 Mount Meru Surrounded by sheer cliffs, trek past Buffalo Swamp and Elephant Ridge to Saddle Hut (3570m). Skirt the crater rim and climb to the summit (4562m). Day 5 Moshi Walk down to the town and relax.

Miriamkamba Hut Saddle Hut
Day 6 Kilimanjaro Trek along the Rongai Route from Nale Moru Village (2020m) on the Kenyan border. Pass through alpine forest, heath and moorland to reach Simba Camp (2700m). Days 7/8 Mawenzi Tarn Trek to Kikelewa Camp (3650m) for views of the ice fi elds. Continue to Mawenzi Tarn, directly below the towering cliffs of Mawenzi Peak (4330m). Days 9/10 Summit Day Walk along the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Leaving
Miriamkamba Hut Momela
Kibo Camp (4700m) at midnight, ascend to Gilman’s Point (5680m) to watch the sun rise. Summit to Uhuru Peak (5895m) before fi nally descending to Horombo (3700m). Day 11 Marangu Gate Walk down to the gate and end of the trek. Drive to Moshi. Day 12 Tour ends Moshi.

Accommodation: 3 nights hotels, 5 nights camping, 3 nights mountain hut. Meals: 11 breakfasts, 10 lunches and 10 dinners are included. Tour staff: Explore Tour Leader, driver(s), mountain guide(s), assistant guides, cook and porters. Transport: 4WD. Trekking Details: This is a 10-day trek with 4 acclimatisation days on Mount Meru and 6 days on Mount Kilimanjaro. We walk between 6 and 7 hours each day, with up to 16 hours on the main summit day. The maximum altitude we reach is 5895m. We have graded this trek as challenging to tough. Group Size: Generally 12 to 16.
