Cappadocia, Taurus & Ararat Trek BKA A challenging trek in the Taurus Mountains and to the summit of Mount Ararat


From ‘fairy chimney’ rock formations of Cappadocia to the snow-covered peak of Mount Ararat, we trek across some of Turkey’s most magnifi cent landscapes. We hike through the Taurus Mountains to the summit of Mount Embler (3723m) and climb to the top of Mount Ararat (5165m). En route we also experience nomad and mountain village life, visit elegant mosques in eastern Anatolia and explore Byzantine architecture in Istanbul.


15 day tour itinerary


Day 1 Join tour Goreme. Days 2/3 Cappadocia Walk among the unusual rock formations and cave houses. We enjoy a panoramic view of the area from Uchisar ‘Castle’ and visit the 5th century basilica in Cavusin. Travel to the Aladag Mountains and climb to the campsite in the Maden Valley (1900m). Days 4/7 Mountain Trek Trek in the high valleys of the Taurus Mountains via the ‘Seven Lakes’. Stop at a series of campsites on the way to the summit

of Mount Embler at 3723m. Descend through a landscape of sand-coloured rock and eat lunch in a traditional village house. Drive to Kayseri and take the sleeper train to Erzurum. Day 8 Erzurum Arrive early evening. Visit the Minareli and Ulu Mosques. Days 9/12 Mount Ararat Cross the Anatolian Plateau to Dogubeyazit. Spend four days trekking up Turkey’s highest peak to the summit at 5165m. Learn how to use ice axes and

crampons. Day 13 Ishak Pasha Palace Descend to Cevirme village. Transfer to Dogubeyazit and visit Ishak Pasha Palace. Drive to Van. Day 14 Istanbul Fly to Istanbul. Enjoy a walking tour of Sultanahmet Square, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace. Day 15 Tour ends Istanbul.

Accommodation: 5 nights standard hotels, 8 nights simple camping, 1 night overnight train. Meals: 14 breakfasts, 11 lunches and 11 dinners are included. Tour staff: Explore Tour Leader, local guides, camp staff, drivers and trek crew. Transport: Bus, sleeper train, adapted truck and internal fl ight. Trekking Details: This tour includes 9-days trekking with an average of 5–6 hours of walking a day, with a maximum of around 9 hours. We reach a maximum altitude of 5165m with ascents of up to 1100m. A lesson will be given on the use of crampons and axes. We have graded this trek as challenging to tough. Group Size: Generally 12 to 16.
