A challenging trek into Mustang, one of Nepal’s least accessible regions


This trek offers the unique opportunity to explore the ‘Forbidden Kingdom’ of Mustang – a destination inaccessible to trekkers before 1992. Surrounded by the breathtaking Himalaya, we follow 15th century trade routes across barley fi elds and dusty plains to the walled city of Lo Manthang. During the journey we explore ancient Buddhist monasteries and meet the welcoming people of Mustang.


20 day tour itinerary


Day 1 Join tour Kathmandu Day 2 Kathmandu Guided tour of the old city and trek briefi ng. Day 3 Pokhara Fly to the lakeside town. Day 4 Kagbeni Fly to Jomsom and trek to this attractive village. Day 5 Acclimatisation Ascend to the pilgrimage centre at Muktinath. Days 6/9 Kali Gandaki River Follow the banks from Chele to Tsarang, crossing steep passes (4020m) and descending into deep gorges. Pass tribal villages, Buddhist temples and stone carvings. Day 10 Lo Manthang Take a rocky trail to 3950m for the fi rst views of the walled city. Cross the ‘Plain of Aspiration’. Day 11 Monasteries Visit Lo Manthang’s religious centres and

school. Day 12 Highest peak Climb to the Chogo La Pass (4325m). Visit the 8th century Lo Gekar monastery and trek down to Dhakmar village. Days 13/15 River bed walk Follow the water once more from Dhakmar to Shyangmochen and on to Jomsom. Days 16/17 Pokhara Fly to Pokhara, time to relax or explore the lake. Days 18/19 Kathmandu Fly to the capital. Free time to explore the temples and bazaar. Day 20 Tour ends Kathmandu.
