Bathed in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream, these nine volcanic islands rise up from the mid-Atlantic ridge. On a series of easy day walks we explore fi ve of the unspoilt islands, discovering crater lakes, thermal springs, deep gorges and craggy coastlines. We can also take boat trips in search of whales and spend time in picturesque fi shing villages.


14 day tour itinerary


Day 1 Join tour Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel. Days 2/4 Sao Miguel Take a walk around Sete Cidades colourful crater lakes; visit the natural ovens and hot springs in the Furnas Valley; stop at the Botanical Gardens for an optional thermal bath. Optional whale watching trip or swim with dolphins. Days 5/6 Terceira Fly to the island. Visit the Renaissance city Angra do Heroismo. Walk to Biscoitos with the chance to

swim in lava rock pools and visit a wine museum. Days 7/9 Sao Jorge Another inter-island fl ight. Descend through the Caldeira de Cima gorge to the coast where there is the chance to swim. Walk along the coastal plains. Spend a free day exploring the island on one of the numerous walks. Days 10/12 Pico Ferry to the island. Option to climb the Pico Alto volcano (2350m) and go whalewatching. Ferry to Faial Island.
