Mt Meru crater/Matthew Roberts TANZANIAN VOLCANO TREK


On this challenging trek we tackle Tanzania’s two highest peaks: Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro. We acclimatise on our hike to Meru’s volcanic cone then we climb Kilimanjaro via the Rongai route on the mountains northern flank. Making the summit push at midnight we reach Uhuru Peak (5895m) by morning to enjoy exhilarating views over the ice fields.


ITINERARY


Days 1/2 Overnight flight to Kilimanjaro. Drive to Arusha. Day 3 Arusha National Park Start the ascent of Tanzania’s second highest peak Mount Meru, looking for Maasai giraffes, elephants and buffalos. Reach Miriakamba Hut (2520m). Days 4/5 Mount Meru Surrounded by sheer cliffs, trek past Buffalo Swamp and Elephant Ridge to Saddle Hut (3570m). Skirt the crater rim and climb to the summit (4562m). Day 6 Moshi Walk down to the town and relax. Day 7 Kilimanjaro Trek along the Rongai Route from Nale Moru Village (2020m) on the Kenyan border. Pass through alpine forest, heath and moorland to reach Simba Camp (2700m). Days 8/9 Mawenzi Tarn Trek to Kikelewa Camp (3650m) for views of the ice fields. Continue to Mawenzi Tarn, directly below the towering cliffs of Mawenzi Peak (4330m). Days 10/11 Summit Day Walk along the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Leaving Kibo Camp (4700m) at midnight, ascend to Gilman’s Point (5680m) to watch the sun rise. Summit to Uhuru Peak (5895m) before finally descending to Horombo (3700m). Day 12 Marangu Gate Walk down to the gate and end of the trek. Drive to Moshi. Days 13/14 Fly to the UK.
