SHADOW OF THE MATTERHORN


Surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks, including the famous Matterhorn, Zermatt provides the perfect base for this trekking holiday in the Alps. We hike through great larch forests, past glaciers and across high altitude passes. There is also the option to climb the Breithorn, standing at 4164m, for breathtaking views of the region.


ITINERARY


Day 1 Fly to Geneva and drive to Zermatt. Day 2 Taschalp Trek through alpine meadows with views of the mighty Matterhorn, standing at 4478m. Hike over a mountain pass to FluAlp (2607m). Day 3 Monte Rosa Massif Walk through alpine meadows and along mountain trails to the great Gorner Glacier (3000m) for views of a 12km chain of snow-capped peaks. Descend to Zermatt. Day 4 Trift Follow the river to Edelweiss Hut (1961m) and on to Trift Hut (2337m). Ascend the steep glacial moraine to Rothorn Hut (3200m). Day 5 Schonbiel Hut Hike beneath the soaring North Face of the Matterhorn. See the Hornli, Zmutt and Italian ridges before arriving at the Schonbiel Hut (2694m). Day 6 Hornli Hut Trek to the Matterhorn base camp (3200m) and watch mountaineers descend the great Hornli ridge. Return to Zermatt. Day 7 Optional activities Climb the Breithorn (4164m), hire bikes or relax at a local spa. Day 8 Drive to Geneva and fly to the UK.

Trekking Details: We hike for 3 days for an average of 6 hours each day. We walk for an average of 12km each day with large ascents and descents of between 1000m and 1600m. We reach a maximum altitude of 4000m and have graded this trip as strenuous to tough.
