The Rodopi Mountains are steeped in ancient Greek mythology: according to legend, the mountains were home to the gods Orpheus and Dionysus. On this walking tour in Bulgaria we explore the beautiful region, visiting remote mountain villages and spectacular landscapes. Staying in a family-run guesthouse we are assured of welcoming Bulgarian hospitality.
ITINERARY
Day 1 Fly to Sofia and drive to Ezerovo. Day 2 Rodopi Mountains Explore the hills above Ezerovo and walk to the village of Nevestata. Day 3 Arda River Hike along old mountain paths still used by shepherds today. Enjoy a barbeque lunch at the springs of the Arda River. Day 4 Mountains villages Walk in the hills above Gela and enjoy the fascinating architecture of Shiroka Laka. Day 5 Smolyan Hike in the area of the Orpheus Rocks and admire the waterfalls. Visit the Museum of History in Smolyan. Day 6 Trigrad Explore the Yagodinska Cave. Walk from the village of Yagodina to Trigdad through alpine meadows. Discover the Trigrad Gorge rising up from the Trigradska River and visit the Devil’s Throat Cave. Day 7 Plovdiv Visit the 11th century Bachkavo Monastery. Explore the town of Plovdiv and drive to Sofia for an evening walking tour. Day 8 Fly to the UK.

On this active winter break we enjoy snowshoeing in the untouched wilderness of the Maliovitza region. We walk among pine trees, frozen lakes and jagged peaks in the snow-covered Rila National Park. We visit the beautiful frescoes of the 10th century Rila Monastery, explore the capital Sofia and enjoy delicious home- cooked Bulgarian cuisine from the warmth of a traditional hotel.

Day 1 Fly to Sofia and drive to the village of Govedartsi at the foot of the Rila Mountains. Day 2 Snow-shoeing Learn to attach the snow shoes to walking boots with the help of a local guide. Take mountain trails through the pine forests of Rila National Park. Reach a large meadow with panoramas across towering peaks and frozen lakes. Descend to the hotel. Day 3 Enter the glacial valley of the Maliovitza River, stopping on the hillside for lunch. Climb above the tree- line to 2100m. Enjoy a traditional home- cooked Bulgarian dinner at the family-run hotel. Day 4 Rila Monastery Spend the morning snow-shoeing in the Kirilova Vada area. Visit the beautiful frescoes of the 10th century Rila Monastery – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Drive to Sofia and take an evening walk around the main sights including the Alexander Nevski Cathedral and the National Theatre. Day 5 Fly to the UK.
