ON FOOT IN THE PYRENEES

We enter the beautiful surroundings of the Catalan Pyrenees on this exploration of Aigues Tortes National Park. Discover the diverse scenery of towering peaks, high mountain lakes, little-visited forests and medieval mountain villages. Each evening we return to family-run hotels where we can enjoy delicious local wines and cheeses.

ITINERARY

Day 1 Fly to Barcelona and drive to Esterri d’Aneu. Days 2/3 Aneu Valley Start from the charming village of Esterri and follow old shepherds’ trails through the valley. Enjoy a picnic lunch from the highest point (1600m). Walk through verdant forests and meadows to a 12th century Romanesque church and traditional hillside villages. Each evening return to the family-run hotel to enjoy the local food and wine. Days 4/7 Exploring Espot Travel by four-wheel drive to Espot and enter Aigues Tortes National Park; this translates as ‘winding waters’ due to its many lakes, rivers and creeks. Hike over the mountain pass beneath Portarro peak (2728m) to San Maurici Lake. Optional summit ascent from where we can admire the views over the Encantats Mountains on the horizon. Follow a challenging but rewarding trail from Espot up to Lake Negre at 2000m. Optional white-water rafting, kayaking or canyoning. Day 8 Drive to Barcelona and fly to the UK.
