Petra SPICE TRAILS OF PETRA


This walking tour covers some of the world’s most magnificent historic and natural sites, including the rock- carved city of Petra and the breathtaking canyons of Wadi Rum. We follow in the footsteps of the ancient Nabateans as we walk along the old spice trails which used to connect Petra with the Mediterranean coast.


ITINERARY


Day 1 Fly to Amman. Day 2 Wadi Rum Drive along the Desert Highway to Wadi Rum and walk through the twisting siqs (canyons) to the camp. Day 3 Gorge walking Spend a day hiking among the gorges and canyons of Wadi Rum, the setting for the Lawrence of Arabia film. Days 4/5 Petra Optional camel ride through the Siq al Barrah. Travel to the ‘Red Rose City’ of Petra: spend two days hiking along the ancient spice trails used by camel caravans travelling with their cargo. Walk up to the famous Monastery, set high above the city. Camp in Bedouin- style tents. Day 6 Little Petra Hike in Little Petra, a caravan station from the 3rd century BC. Drive along the 5000- year-old King’s Highway to Kerak castle. Visit the ‘City of Mosaics’ in Madaba and admire the views from Mount Nebo. Day 7 Jerash Drive via the Dead Sea to Jerash – one of the most impressive surviving Roman cities. Drive to Amman. Day 8 Fly to the UK.

Enjoy a long weekend in Lebanon as we snow-shoe among the cedar groves on the slopes of Mount Lebanon. We also hike through the rugged landscape of the Qadisha Valley - home to several early Christian monasteries. We end the trip in the cosmopolitan capital Beirut, where we visit the bustling market of Souk el Barghout.


ITINERARY


Day 1 Fly to Beirut. Day 2 Mount Lebanon Drive to the northern range of Mount Lebanon – home to the highest peak in the Near East (3088m). Snow-shoe along the mountainous slopes of the cedar reserve and admire views of the Begaa Valley and Mount Hermon. Day 3 Snow-shoeing Enjoy a full day snow-shoeing in the high mountains of Lebanon. Day 4 Qadisha Valley Hike through the rugged landscape and past the monasteries of the Qadisha Valley – home to one of the most important early Christian settlements in the world. Drive to Beirut. Day 5 Fly to the UK.
