Peña de Arias Montano WALKING IN THE SIERRA DE ARACENA
Explore the mountain trails of Spain’s unspoilt Sierra de Aracena. Set amid a verdant and rolling landscape we enjoy scenic village to village walks along ancient drover routes. We also climb to the summit of Cerro San Cristobal for spectacular views over the surrounding area. We stay in a traditional village house, experience rural Andalucian culture and enjoy delicious local cuisine.
ITINERARY
Day 1 Fly to Seville and travel to the village of Castaño del Robledo near Aracena. Day 2 Castaño Walk to Alajár: visit the historic shrine and spectacular viewpoint of the Peña de Arias Montano. Day 3 Three Villages Explore the villages of Navahermosa, Valdelarco and Galaroza on the lesser-visited northern side of the Natural Park. Day 4 High Level Route Climb to the summit of Cerro San Cristobal Peak and walk to the historic village of Almonaster. Admire views over the Sierra and visit the 9th century mosque. Day 5 Free Day Optional activities include: horse riding, mountain biking or a day trip to historic Seville. Day 6 Jabugo Walk to the village of Jabugo - famous for producing some of the world’s finest cured Serrano ham. Explore the towns of Santa Ana, Aguafria and Los Romeros. Day 7 Riverside Picnic Walk to Cortelazor and enjoy lunch at a riverside picnic area. Return to Castaño. Day 8 Drive to Seville and fly to the UK.
Our ‘posada’ is a converted town house that retains many of its original features, from terracotta floor tiles to chestnut roof beams. The thick outer walls keep the house cool in summer and cosy in winter, while the terrace is perfect for the sierra sunshine. There are nine bedrooms of which all but two have private facilities, two lounges (one with a large log fire), a dining room and a small patio and garden.
