CHOOSING YOUR ADVENTURE HOLIDAY
We have a range of walking and trekking tours in over 50 countries. To help you fi nd the right trip, we’ve organised our tours into the main trekking categories. These are listed in the details section for each tour.
TREK GRADES
We have graded all our walks and treks to help you choose the right trip. You will also fi nd more detailed information on individual tour pages, along with charts showing the daily walking distances and the amount of ascent and descent, with a brief description of the terrain.
Easy Short walks, around 4 to 5 hours per day. Routes are at low altitude and the terrain is undemanding. Only minor ascents and descents are involved. Previous walking or trekking experience is not necessary: you just need to be reasonably fi t and active.
Moderate
Medium duration walks, around 5 to 7 hours per day. Normally at low altitude and on well-maintained trails, but expect some fairly demanding ascents and descents, up to about 800 metres per day. You do not need previous experience but should be moderately active and fi t.
Strenuous Long and sometimes challenging walks, normally around 6 to 8 hours per day. You should expect some diffi cult terrain and some high-altitude trekking. Ascents and descents are demanding, up to about 1000 metres per day. High levels of fi tness and stamina are required and some previous trekking experience is recommended.
Tough Very long trekking days, normally 7 to 9 hours per day and sometimes longer. Often at high altitude and across diffi cult terrain; these treks sometimes involve scrambling or crossing snowfi elds. You should expect ascents and descents of more than 1000 metres per day. Trekking experience, preferably at high altitudes, is strongly recommended. You must have a good level of physical fi tness and mental stamina.
Simple local accommodation; typically hostels, pensions or teahouses that are clean and comfortable and usually have shared facilities. Alternatively it could be a campsite with showers and toilets, and a support crew to help out with camp chores.
Hotels and guesthouses (often family run) with en-suite bathrooms but lacking other facilities such as bars and restaurants.
Higher quality hotels, lodges or guesthouses, with more comfortable bedrooms, en suite bathrooms and often other facilities such as restaurants, bars and a swimming pool.
Distinctive hotels chosen for their character, fantastic location or local importance. They are normally 4 star or above, with excellent facilities and a high level of comfort and service.
Often you’ll stay in different styles of accommodation during your trip; so we make an average rating across the entire tour. Please see our trip notes for more specifi c details on the accommodation for each night.
COMFORT RATINGS
We’ve given each tour a comfort rating to give you a general idea about the comfort level on each tour and so that you have a better idea of the type of accommodation you will be staying in at the end of your day’s adventure. They are intended to help you compare one trip against another.
RATINGS
Down-to-earth and natural: typically camping with limited facilities. You will pitch your own tent and help out with the camp chores.
SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE BUDGET
Our trekking holidays are suitable for everyone with a thirst for adventure, whether you are travelling solo, as a couple or with friends. However we also offer a range of budget, an In Style option as well as specialist trips for people travelling solo.
IN STYLE
Light on your pocket but not on great experiences; these fun and fl exible treks let you decide how much to spend on activities, destinations and food. You travel mainly on public transport and stay in simpler hotels.
On our Everest In style tour you will stay in comfortable and characterful lodges in the Everest region.
SOLO DEPARTURES
Some of our treks have departure dates that are reserved for solo travellers. We have shown where this is an option on the individual tours.
