Enterprise & Trade
Relations between China and Ireland have developed smoothly and rapidly since formal diplomatic relations were established in 1979 and ambassadors exchanged in 1980.
S
ince that time visits to China by Irish delegations have become regular occurrences, due to the importance of trade and cultural links between the two countries.
China is now Ireland’s 10th largest trading partner. Sino-Irish trade volume has been growing rapidly since
the 1980s due to a number of bi-lateral trade agreements between the two countries. Enterprise Ireland set up an office in Beijing in 1979 and in Shanghai in early 1998. Enterprise Ireland’s purpose is to assist Irish companies to achieve strong positions in global markets, and specifically to increase their export sales in trading with the People’s Republic of China. The Irish Government’s Asia Strategy was launched
eleven years ago and placed China at the core of Ireland’s economic relationship with Asia. China is now by far Ireland’s largest trading partner in Asia and the trade volume has reached E5.3 billion for 2009, with merchandise exports growing to E2.4 billion. Today more than 100 Irish companies have operations
established in China – up from fewer than 50 just over four years ago – and more Irish companies are being established in China every month, many with the help and support of Enterprise Ireland which now has four China offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.
