Diplomatic Relationships H


igh level visits between China and Ireland have enhanced the relationship between the two countries. Ireland was honoured to host a visit from the Premier of the State Council of the


People’s Republic of China Mr Wen Jiabao in May 2004. This followed a very successful State visit by Ireland’s President Mary McAleese to China the previous year where she was received by President Hu Jintao, National People’s Congress Chairman Wu Bangguo and by the Premier. The Irish President is also due to visit Shanghai in June 2010. Over the past decade Ireland has actively promoted a relationship


of mutual trust and friendship and economic and commercial exchanges, particularly in the education sector, have become more diversified. There is now an exchange of Cultural Festivals between China and Ireland and the relationship was further strengthened by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding relating to China’s acceptance of Ireland as an ‘approved destination’ for tourism groups from China.
